EHang's EH216-S completes its first pilotless flights in Switzerland

EHang's EH216-S pilotless eVTOL completed its first flights in Switzerland, in Quinto, Ticino, conducted with the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA), the municipality and DroneVia, EHang's Swiss project partner. The flights extend EHang's footprint to 22 countries and were framed around mountainous-terrain operations, with future applications in regional logistics, tourism and emergency response to be evaluated with regulators.

Why it matters

A Chinese pilotless eVTOL flying in cooperation with a European civil aviation authority is the notable part — EASA-region regulators have been the hardest gate for autonomous (no-pilot-onboard) designs, which is why Western rivals like Joby fly piloted aircraft. Every EHang jurisdiction added builds the operating-history file that autonomous certification ultimately rests on, while its Western competitors are still certifying with pilots in the seat.
