In a preclinical feasibility study published in Nature, teleoperated Unitree G1 humanoid robots completed two minimally invasive gallbladder removals on live pigs — the first surgeries performed by humanoid robots. Surgeons controlled the ~5-foot, ~60-pound robots throughout via motion capture, foot pedals and tracking systems, using standard surgical tools rather than custom robotic instruments. Caveats are real: the robots required recalibration mid-procedure, lengthening operating time, and teleoperation latency remains a limitation.
Why it matters
The surgical-robot market is owned by fixed, custom platforms (Intuitive's da Vinci) that cost more than some hospitals' annual equipment budgets. A general-purpose humanoid using ordinary instruments inverts that economics — one ~$16K-class robot body, many jobs — and points at remote surgery for small clinics that could never justify a da Vinci. For Unitree, days after IPO approval, it's evidence its hardware is becoming the default research platform for embodied applications far beyond factory work.
