A frontier lab publishes numbers on its own rate of AI-driven R&D
Anthropic — automation index, agent oversight, safety compute — Anthropic published three measurements on 17 Sep 2026 intended to let outsiders track how fast development is moving inside a frontier lab. As of August 2026 Claude was at the 'leads' level for 26% of the company's model R&D, up from 1% in March, and at collaborator level or above for more than 90%. About 30,000 internal agents run research and engineering work at any one time on its most-used platform; every action passes an online monitor before it runs, and of more than a billion decisions in August, 0.002% — about 1 in 47,000 — were blocked. In the week of 13–20 July about 6% of AI R&D compute went to safety work, rising to about 12% of the share AI itself was carrying out. The 1%-to-26% move in five months is the figure that makes the rest legible. Every number here is the lab measuring itself: the task map behind the automation index was built from Anthropic's own work records, and no external party has verified any of the ratings. Anthropic says third-party evaluators are being set up.
