Hyundai takes full control of Boston Dynamics — days after the first anti-robot car-factory strike
Hyundai will buy SoftBank's remaining 9.9% of Boston Dynamics for about $325M — a put option priced at the 2021 valuation (~$3.3B) — taking 100% ownership as it readies Atlas for factory deployment from 2028. The move lands days after Ulsan workers staged the car industry's first strike over humanoid robots.
Hyundai Motor and its affiliates will acquire SoftBank's remaining 9.9% stake in Boston Dynamics for roughly $325M, taking the robot maker to 100% ownership. SoftBank triggered a put option embedded in the 2021 deal, so the price values Boston Dynamics at about $3.3B — the same mark as five years ago. Hyundai plans to test Atlas at its Georgia Metaplant in individual production processes and begin real sequencing work in 2028, with a stated ambition of more than 25,000 Atlas robots across Hyundai and Kia plants.
The timing is pointed: from July 13–15, unionized workers at Hyundai's main Ulsan complex cut day and night shifts short in what the WSJ called the first car-factory stoppage over humanoid robots — demanding salary-based pay (to blunt automation-driven hour cuts) and a retirement age of 65 before Atlas arrives on Korean lines.
Update (2026-07-19): Korean reports now frame the buyout as an IPO setup — with SoftBank's 9.65% stake absorbed, Boston Dynamics is expected to select underwriters and pursue a Nasdaq listing as early as 2027. Executive Chair Chung Euisun personally holds 20% of Boston Dynamics; local brokerages sketch listing valuations of ₩100–150T (far above the $3.3B put-option mark), which would make his stake a funding source for succession and governance restructuring. Treat those valuations as sell-side projections, not marks.
Why it matters
Full ownership at a flat 2021 price is a quiet bargain for the automaker making the industry's biggest humanoid bet — compare the $2.2B private mark LimX just raised at for a four-year-old startup. And the strike is a genuine first: the labor friction that forecasts of a 3-billion-robot economy treat as a footnote has now shut down real production lines. Whether deployment is negotiated or imposed in Ulsan will be studied by every manufacturer watching Figure at BMW and its peers.
What to watch
Closing terms and any restructuring of Boston Dynamics under sole ownership; the Ulsan wage-deal outcome as the template for humanoid-era labor contracts; the 2028 Georgia deployment milestones.
Who's involved
Owns Boston Dynamics (since 2021), develops humanoid robots for its plants, and runs robotaxis via its Motional JV.
Hyundai-owned; electric Atlas humanoid in customer pilots.
