IonQ clears the last approval to buy SkyWater — the first vertically integrated quantum-chip maker
IonQ received final regulatory approval to acquire chip foundry SkyWater Technology ($35/share, cash-and-stock), closing July 31. It secures a fully domestic semiconductor supply chain — SkyWater's Minnesota, Florida and Texas fabs and advanced packaging — making IonQ, it says, the only vertically integrated full-stack quantum company.
IonQ received final regulatory approval to complete its acquisition of SkyWater Technology, positioning the deal — $35.00 per share in cash and stock, announced in January — to close July 31. SkyWater will continue as a wholly owned subsidiary serving foundry customers, but the point is control: IonQ gains a domestic semiconductor supply chain across SkyWater's Minnesota, Florida and Texas facilities, spanning foundational nodes and advanced packaging, which IonQ says makes it the only vertically integrated full-stack quantum-computing company. Why it matters
Quantum's scaling bottleneck is increasingly manufacturing, not physics, and IonQ just bought the fab instead of renting one. Owning production is a different bet than the government-validation route PsiQuantum took with DARPA or the modality-hedge IBM made buying HRL: it's vertical integration to control cost, yield and — pointedly, the same week the US walled off Chinese robots — domestic supply. For a sector where public names have swung on hype-versus-substance, a closed foundry acquisition is a concrete asset, not a roadmap. The trade-off is that IonQ now carries a capital-intensive fab business and its cyclicality, on top of a pre-revenue quantum bet.
