Mobileye to launch its own US robotaxi service in 2027, scaling to ~17,000 vehicles

Mobileye announced it will establish a vertically integrated robotaxi business, launching its own service in a major US city in 2027 with an initial fleet of about 100 fully driverless vehicles and a plan to scale to roughly 17,000 over five years. The service combines Mobileye Drive (its self-driving system) with the mobility platform of its Moovit subsidiary. Commercial details are promised at a US Capital Markets Day before the end of 2026.

Why it matters

The industry's biggest supplier just decided to compete with its customers. Mobileye's whole thesis was selling autonomy to automakers and fleet operators; running its own service says the operator margin is where the value sits — the same conclusion Waymo reached in Phoenix when it took back its fleet from Uber. A 17,000-vehicle target would make it a top-tier US operator if delivered.
