World first: a commercial brain-computer interface is implanted in a paying patient

Neuracle performed the world's first surgical implant of a commercially approved BCI at a Shanghai hospital on July 13. The coin-sized NEO device — cleared by China's NMPA in March — sits on the sensorimotor cortex of a patient who lost hand function in a car crash a decade ago, translating neural signals into movement via a robotic glove.

Chinese neurotech firm Neuracle performed the world's first surgical implant of a commercially approved brain-computer interface on July 13, at a hospital in Shanghai. The recipient lost hand mobility in a car accident ten years ago; the coin-sized NEO (Neural Electronic Opportunity) device — eight electrodes placed on the surface of the sensorimotor cortex, without penetrating brain tissue — records the signals fired as he imagines moving his hand and routes them to a robotic glove. NEO was approved by China's NMPA in March, the first invasive-class BCI cleared for commercial sale by any national regulator.

Why it matters

BCIs just crossed the line from trials to commerce. Every prior implant on record — Paradromics' first human, Neuralink's Canada transdural work — was investigational; this one is a product, prescribed and delivered under a market approval, four months after clearance. It also cements the pattern the March approval set: China's regulatory-first path is beating the US venture-first path to commercialization, with Neuralink still in trials as Neuracle starts selling.

What to watch

Rehab outcomes for patient one and the pace of subsequent implants (Neuracle has spoken of scaling to hundreds of cases), plus whether the first commercial procedure accelerates FDA thinking on a US pathway.
