Oak Ridge licenses four pellet-fuelling inventions to Type One Energy

ORNL licensed a suite of cryogenic pellet fuelling technologies — four lab inventions — to stellarator developer Type One Energy, signed at the Nuclear Opportunities Workshop in Knoxville. The technique freezes hydrogen into solid pellets near absolute zero and fires them into the plasma at high speed.

The Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory licensed four inventions covering the design and operation of cryogenic pellet fuelling systems to Type One Energy. Cryogenic pellet fuelling forms hydrogen into solid pellets a few degrees above absolute zero and injects them into a fusion plasma at high speed — the practical way to keep a burning plasma fed, and a field ORNL has led for decades. The agreement was signed at the Nuclear Opportunities Workshop in Knoxville on 5 August.

Why it matters

Fuelling is one of the unglamorous problems standing between a plasma that holds and a plant that runs: gas puffing at the edge does not reach the core of a dense, hot plasma, so pellets are how fuel actually gets where fusion happens. Type One is designing a stellarator for a TVA site in Tennessee, and licensing a mature national-lab technology instead of re-inventing an injector is the kind of decision that compresses schedule — the same pattern as the industry buying magnets and power supplies rather than building every subsystem in-house. It is a technology transfer, not a construction step: no reactor gets built by this agreement, and the terms were not disclosed.

What to watch

Whether the licensed injector design appears in Type One's Infinity Two engineering baseline, and whether other private fusion developers follow with lab licences rather than in-house fuelling programmes.
