Vodafone and Ireland run Europe's first mission-critical satellite call over AST's constellation

Vodafone Ireland and Ireland's Office of the Government CIO tested mission-critical communications (MCx) for emergency services over AST SpaceMobile's satellite constellation — including a live video call from a standard smartphone on Clare Island, County Mayo, placed through Satellite Connect Europe, the Vodafone–AST joint venture. Vodafone called it the first test of its kind in Europe.

Why it matters

Direct-to-device has been consumer-framed (dead-zone texting); this points at the higher-margin market — government-grade emergency communications, where uptime is procured, not subscribed. A state actor testing MCx over AST's constellation, in the same week Japan subsidized the Rakuten–AST network as sovereign infrastructure, shows AST's demand stack widening from carriers to governments.
