The new workload optimizes tracking-area lists — the groupings of cells a network uses to know roughly where a handset is — which have to balance signalling load against connectivity. DOCOMO reports location-registration signals, generated whenever a device crosses a TA-List boundary, fell 65.3% at the daily peak, with paging signals down 7.0%.
Why it matters
Two production applications at one carrier is a different claim from a pilot: the first deployment could be an experiment, the second is a decision that the first one paid. The workload also sits exactly where annealing is supposed to be useful — a large combinatorial partitioning problem where a good answer fast beats an optimal answer slowly, and where the alternative is buying capacity to absorb the load instead. That is the practical shape of near-term quantum value, and it is a long way from the fault-tolerance milestones the field is judged on: no error correction, no logical qubits, just a solver that earned a second contract.
