China recovers an orbital rocket booster for the first time — with a net instead of legs
CASC's Long March 10B, launched from Hainan, recovered its first-stage booster at sea about six minutes after stage separation — caught by a net-and-hook system rather than landing on legs, China's first controlled recovery of an orbital launch vehicle and the first net-based one anywhere. China's state-owned CASC launched the Long March 10B — a two-stage, ~63m rocket — from Hainan island and recovered its first-stage booster about six minutes after stage separation: four landing hooks engaged a tensioned cable net on an offshore recovery vessel, a legless design CASC says cuts structural mass, raises payload capacity and widens the capture window. CASC called it the country's first successful controlled recovery of a launch vehicle. Until now, vertical landings of orbital-class boosters had been performed only by SpaceX — which does them routinely — and Blue Origin, whose New Glenn first landed in November 2025 and reflew a booster in April 2026.

Why it matters
Reusability is the cost moat of Western launch — the thing that let SpaceX undercut everyone and that Rocket Lab and Blue Origin are still scaling. A state-backed Chinese landing doesn't equal SpaceX's cadence (one landing versus thousands), but it starts the clock on reuse-priced Chinese launch, with implications for every commercial payload market Western providers assume is theirs. The strategic echo of the announcement matters as much as the engineering: this was the milestone Beijing most wanted.
