Why it matters
Every deuterium-tritium power plant has the same unsolved dependency: tritium barely exists in nature, so the reactor has to breed its own from lithium in a blanket wrapped around the plasma — and it must breed more than it burns, or the plant runs out of fuel. No one has demonstrated that at plant scale. The result is that fusion's most-watched metrics (temperature, duration, gain) all describe the plasma, while the thing that decides whether a plant can run for years describes the wall around it. A dedicated public test bed shifts that from each company's private engineering problem to shared infrastructure, which is how the field's other bottlenecks — magnets, power supplies, pellet fuelling — got cheaper. The catch is the same one attached to every facility announcement: funding commitments are not concrete, and until UNITY-3 has a construction schedule this changes nothing measurable.
