Waymo reported a fatal Dallas crash to NHTSA: its vehicle was slowing for a pedestrian in the roadway when an SUV struck that pedestrian, sending them into the Waymo's rear left side. Juan Guzman, 71, died. It is the only Texas fatality in NHTSA's robotaxi database since June 2025, and the causal order is the part the headline cannot carry.
Waymo runs 450,000 paid driverless rides a week on 200 million rider-only miles, and 2026 brought the field's first paid rides with no steering wheel, a London licence — and its first real setbacks: a 3,791-vehicle recall, a freeway pause, and China's first nationwide permit freeze.
Waymo opened its Dallas robotaxi service to everyone on 4 August, ending the invitation-only phase that had governed the market since its February commercial launch. Waymo says nearly 150,000 riders came through the interest list during the phased rollout.
Waymo / California Public Utilities Commission — The CPUC cleared Waymo on 14 Aug 2026 to charge for fully driverless rides across 18 counties — 12 in the north (the whole Bay Area plus Sacramento, Santa Cruz, Sonoma and others) and six in the south (Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Ventura) — opening Sacramento and San Diego as new markets. The authority covers freeways, city streets, rural roads and rail crossings, day or night, in rain, fog and hail; only widespread snow or ice is excluded. It is permission, not deployment: Waymo says the rollout stays measured, so most of the approved territory has no service yet.
Waymo gave notice it will launch its own app in Austin and Atlanta in January 2028, ending Uber's exclusive right to dispatch its robotaxis there. Hundreds of Waymo vehicles stay on Uber through at least May 2028 under the existing contract. The FT reports the split stems from tensions including conflicting policy lobbying — following the earlier Phoenix wind-down.
Waymo began fully driverless operations in Las Vegas and will open Denver, San Diego and Tampa — employee rides first, public by year-end — pushing past 10 US cities toward its target of 1 million paid rides a week by end of 2026.
Waymo's robotaxis left Uber's Phoenix network — a quiet May breakup confirmed in late June. Waymo folded the cars back into its own app; Uber says a new (unnamed) AV partner for Phoenix is coming. Austin and Atlanta continue.
Waymo registered a German subsidiary (Waymo Germany GmbH) in Munich — groundwork for autonomous ride-hailing in Europe after planned London and Tokyo moves. No service date is set yet.
Element Fleet Management signed a multi-year partnership to provide end-to-end fleet management — lifecycle, charging, maintenance — for Waymo's autonomous ride-hailing fleet, starting in San Diego.
